Teacher Leadership Programs

Teacher leadership is the key to sustainable success in education. Lyle Kirtman, leadership consultant, author, and researcher is bringing his national program to school districts across the country to provide opportunities for teachers to enhance their voice and impact on improving student achievement.

This is not about just asking for input from teachers on school practices but is about increasing the skills in the teacher role to have greater impact for students and families. The pandemic has shown the amazing work of teachers nationally. There are countless accounts of teachers going beyond their traditional roles to impact the lives of students and families.

The teacher is the closest person to the student and therefore can have the greatest impact on student achievement. We need to listen to teachers much more and empower them through the commitment to develop their skills and behaviors based on the competencies of the best leaders in education. Kirtman will share his nationally acclaimed research on effective leadership in education. His new work is in building teachers as the true instructional leaders in education.

Identify teacher leadership as the key strategy

  1. Define your North Star

  2. Define teacher leadership

  3. Identify teacher talent and support them to assume informal/formal leadership roles in schools and districts.

  4. Use teacher evaluation as a tool for intrinsic development not external evaluation.

  5. Train and coach principals and teachers together on shared leadership and management (systemic thinking, political and influence skills)

  6. Integrate teacher leadership in the hiring of all staff
